Suicide prevention training available online

Hosted by Maureen Underwood, LCSW, the former director of the New Jersey Adolescent Suicide Prevention Project, this informative program is adapted from the “faculty training module” of the LIFELINES school-based curriculum for youth suicide prevention.

LIFELINES was created in the early 1980s by Underwood and the late John Kalafat, PhD, of Rutgers University. It has been adapted in subsequent years to reflect relevant research and best-practice knowledge related to youth suicide prevention. It has also been subjected to rigorous evaluation.

This training, “Making Educators Partners in Suicide Prevention,” provides practical information specific to the school setting while addressing the following content areas:

    * Correcting myths and misinformation about youth suicide
   *  Presenting accurate, evidence-based data about suicide risk, warning signs,
         and protective factors
    * Outlining the educator’s part in the prevention process
    * Discussing ways for dealing with at-risk students
    * Identifying additional resources, especially those that are web-based

The training emphasizes your critical but limited role in the identification and referral of students who may be at risk for suicide. This program is offered free of charge to NJEA members through a generous grant from the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide. It may be accessed at the www.sptsnj.org website training link.
